RSCM Scotland Summer School 2012
AFTERNOON WORKSHOP SESSIONS
The RSCM Scotland Summer School runs from Monday 9 to Thursday 12 July and incorporates the highly successful (now in its 15th year) Dunblane Singing Break. Residents are staying at Stirling University with services held in Dunblane Cathedral. As a new initiative this year we are offering Workshops on the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (10 and 11 July) on Vocal Technique, Organ Accompaniment, Cantor Training and Choosing Choir Music which we are making available FREE OF CHARGE to non-residents. There will be 3 Sessions running between 2.00 and 3.30 and you are welcome to come on either or both days, choosing a different option each day or the same option both days.
1. Vocal Technique (Tuesday and Wednesday)
We are delighted to announce that Edinburgh-based Susan Hamilton, International Soprano Soloist and Co-Founder and Director of the Dunedin Consort will be Vocal Tutor on this year’s Course. Her tips and advice on all aspects of Vocal Technique will be invaluable.
2. Organ playing and Accompaniment (Tuesday and Wednesday)
Matthew Beetschen and Sheila Robertson will offer helpful guidance on matters organ-related, particularly regarding accompaniment of services and of choirs but of solo organ pieces too. We aim to use both the Dunblane Flentrop organ and another local instrument. Bring along any music you’d like to play!
3a. Cantor Training(Tuesday only)
Pat Lynch will offer guidance and encouragement in how to lead a congregation in sung parts of the service using the voice. Music may be accompanied or not.
3b. Choosing and Using Music (Wednesday only)
Gordon Appleton leads a session designed to show the sort of simple music which can be used effectively by small choirs in worship. Music will include some recent RSCM publications, some new hymns, songs from the world church and music from the Iona Community. As there will be quite a lot of singing during the rest of the course, this session will offer opportunities for listening and discussion.
