Presidents welcome to 2014/15

Dear Friends,

Once again we’ve enjoyed a hot and sunny summer. Now it is time to look ahead to the new season’s programme

We begin on Saturday 13th September at 2.30pm with a visit to Calder Church, Coatbridge. Jack Donald will give a short recital on the Father Willis organ. After that organists will be welcome to play the instrument so please bring your music and your organ shoes.

On Saturday 4th October we will have a joint meeting with the Glasgow Society of Organists in Renfield St Stephens, Bath Street at 2.30pm. John Kitchen, well-known to LSO members, will give a demonstration –“Improve Your Game ! Better Hymn Accompaniment.” I hope as many of us as possible will go. Public transport is easy to Charing Cross station or by bus.

Also in October on Saturday 18th we will have an Organ Recital given by Dr Peter Christie on the Forster and Andrews organ in Uddingston Old Parish Church. It is entitled “ Visions of Heaven and Hell”. Dr Christie was for years an organist in Glasgow and Paisley and was till recently at St. Mary’s Haddington.
The meeting will be at 3pm. Afterwards we will be going to The Grapevine in Bothwell for an early evening meal. (£14 for two courses) Please let me know if you intend to go as we need to give numbers to the restaurant. Lifts will be available to any without cars.

On November 29th we have our annual joint meeting with the Stirling and District Society. This will be a Clarsach and Recorder Recital in the beautiful historic Gargunnock Parish Church (first village west of Stirling Castle) at 2.30pm.

Into 2015 we will have a Members’ Get-together with our favourite CDs on Saturday 17th January at 2.30pm in Hamilton Old Parish Church.

On Saturday 21st February Lord Gill , Scotland’s senior judge, will give a talk based on his new book on recording church organs (i.e. recording historically) in New St Andrew’s Church, Coatbridge at 2.30 pm.

Then on March 21st we will have another Come and Sing event in Bothwell Parish Church, this time singing Faure’s Requiem. The conductor will be Philip Hotham and the organist John Pitcathley. The rehearsal will be at 2pm and the performance at 5pm. Please tell all your contacts.

On Saturday 25th April we will hold our AGM in Hamilton Old Parish Church at 2.30pm.

The Scottish Federation of Organists’ Conference will be in Stenhouse and Carron Parish Church, FK5 4BU on 15th and 16th May 2015.

Although we are a small society I think we achieve a lot for organs, choirs and music in Lanarkshire. We hope you will join the LSO again. We look forward to seeing you.

Yours sincerely,
Mary A. Smith
