Musical Director, Broughton St Mary’s Edinburgh

BROUGHTON ST. MARY’S PARISH CHURCH, EDINBURGH

CHURCH OF SCOTLAND

APPOINTMENT OF MUSIC DIRECTOR

Broughton St. Mary’s Parish Church is seeking to appoint an organist/choir director.

The church has a 2 manual Lewis organ (1882) which is well maintained. The instrument is regarded as a great example of Lewis’ work (being virtually unaltered). There is also a modern ‘baby grand’ piano (Young Chang)

The church has a tradition of choral music with an adult choir. Hymns are chosen by the minister and include varied settings of some modern contemporary hymns and songs. Choir Introits and Anthems are accompanied weekly by the organist either on organ or piano.

The duties include playing the organ at Sunday worship and on other occasions as required by the Kirk Session and liaising with the minister in the development of use of music within worship. You will also be responsible for co-ordinating the worship contributions of the choir. This will include rehearsing on Thursday evenings and for ½ hour prior to Sunday worship.

A successful applicant will:

· Cultivate a positive, engaging and encouraging presence with the choir, congregation and volunteers.

· Have a willingness to collaborate, be open, and work as a team.

· Commit to open and consistent communication with the minister, choir members and others as required.

A modest allowance for the purchase of music for organ and choir is available. The salary is set in accordance with the recognised Scottish Federation of Organists scale C.

Expressions of interest, accompanied by details of previous experience and of qualifications and for an Information Pack, should be intimated to Ian Buckingham, via sessionclerk@bstmchurch.org.uk by 15 November 2026.

About us Founded in 1962 we’ve been serving Lanarkshire’s Church Musicians for almost 50 years. We exist to promote organ and church music – whatever form that may take! Our membership is small with only 20 or so members, but we represent a wide spectrum of ages and interests. Our aim is to encourage those with an interest in Church music and music in general – especially the young, promote music activities in relation to the organ and build a social network of organists in Lanarkshire, to adapt to the changing needs of organists and musicians and church music in general.
